What Exactly Are Investors Buying?
Anthem Biosciences operates across two businesses: CRDMO and Specialty Ingredients, with CRDMO forming the core of the investment thesis. The company offers an integrated platform spanning drug discovery, preclinical development, clinical manufacturing and commercial manufacturing, across both small molecules and biologics.
Its capabilities include ADCs, RNAi, peptides, lipids, oligonucleotides and biologics, positioning it in several high-value and rapidly evolving areas of drug development.
The scale of execution is already significant: 8,000+ customer projects and 675+ customers historically. In simple terms: Anthem is not just selling research services but building long-term participation in the lifecycle of successful drugs.
A Large Pipeline and Global Customer Base
Anthem’s portfolio included around 242 ongoing projects, spanning high-value areas such as ADCs, RNAi, lipids, peptides and oligonucleotides. With customers across 44+ countries, including the US, Europe and Japan, Anthem has built a diversified global customer base. Approximately 80% of revenue coming from Europe and North America, giving the direct exposure to the world’s largest pharmaceutical markets and their growing outsourcing needs.
This global footprint provides significant growth potential, but also brings exposure to pharma spending cycles, regulatory and geopolitical changes, currency movements and customer inventory cycles. This reach is therefore both competitive advantage and an important source of risk.
The Revenue Model Is Becoming More Valuable

Operating Profit: ₹834 crore
The combination of ~39% operating margins, ROCE above 30% and ROE above 20% places Anthem among a select group of Indian companies delivering both strong profitability and high returns on capital. These metrics indicate strong profitability and efficient capital utilisation, supporting the quality of Anthem’s underlying business model.
Balance Sheet — A Major Competitive Advantage
Anthem’s balance sheet is a key strength, combining minimal debt, strong cash generation and substantial liquidity. By FY26, borrowings had fallen to just ~₹50 crore, while operating cash flow stood at ~₹889 crore and free cash flow at ~₹753 crore. As of June 30, 2026, the company reported a net cash position of ₹1,720 crore.
This financial strength allows Anthem to fund expansion largely through internal resources while retaining flexibility for capacity expansion, technology investments, acquisitions and strategic opportunities.
The balance sheet strength is further reflected in ICRA’s upgrade of long-term rating to AA with a Stable outlook, with the short-term rating at A1+.
Q1 FY27 — Weak Revenue, Strong Margins
Q1 FY27 revenue weakness appears to have been driven primarily by customer delivery timing, according to management. However, the explanation remains unproven until subsequent quarters demonstrate the expected recovery. If revenue and margins improve from Q2 onwards, Q1 may prove to be a timing-related anomaly. If the recovery fails to materialise, investors may need to reassess the underlying growth trajectory.
Capacity Expansion — Unit 4 Could Drive the Next Growth Phase
Anthem is investing around ₹1,200 crore in Phase 1 of Unit 4, adding approximately 365 KL of custom-synthesis and 100 KL of fermentation capacity, along with food and nutraceutical manufacturing capabilities.
Scheduled for completion by FY28-end, the project represents a significant growth investment, with FY27 capex expected at around ₹700 crore. The expansion is being aligned with the expected growth of existing commercial molecules and potential late-stage programme launches, reducing the risk of building capacity ahead of demand.
Pipeline — The Long-Term Earnings Engine
Anthem currently has:

Around 10 late-stage programmes
Multiple ADC, Peptide, RNAi, Lipid and Oligonucleotide programmes.
The pipeline provides significant optionality, but its economic value depends on programme progression, customer decisions, regulatory approvals and eventual commercialisation. Therefore, the late-stage pipeline is more important to near- and medium-term earnings visibility than the headline number of early-stage programmes.
Semaglutide & GLP-1 — Attractive Optionality
Anthem has completed the manufacturing scale-up and trials for Semaglutide API and is awaiting CDSCO approval. Management expects the first regulatory clearance within one to two quarters, although timelines remain uncertain.
Given the rapid growth of the GLP-1 market, Semaglutide could become a meaningful opportunity. However, it should be viewed as upside optionality—not a core earnings assumption.
Big Pharma Relationships — A Long-Term Growth Lever
Anthem’s expanding relationships with large pharmaceutical companies could become an important long-term growth driver. However, management indicates that such relationships can take 3–4 years to mature, making them more relevant to medium- and long-term revenue visibility than near-term earnings.
Another positive development is the acquisition of a major biotech customer by a Big Pharma company. Anthem’s existing engagement is in late Phase III development; successful commercialisation could potentially open the door to a broader relationship with the acquirer.
These developments are best viewed as long-term growth optionality rather than near-term earnings drivers.
Shareholding — A Structure Worth Watching

Valuation — The Achilles Heel
Anthem’s biggest weakness is valuation. With a P/E broadly around 60–80x and a PEG of roughly 2.4–2.5x, the market is already pricing in substantial future growth.
The premium is understandable given its ~39% OPM, ~30% ROCE, strong cash generation, net-cash balance, global customer base, CRDMO pipeline and commercialisation potential.
But high valuation creates a key risk: even strong earnings growth may not translate into equally strong stock returns if the P/E multiple contracts.
Anthem is therefore a quality-at-a-premium investment—not a value stock.

Technical Analysis — Momentum Turns Strongly Bullish
The daily Trading View chart presents a strongly constructive technical setup. GMMA shows the short-term averages crossing above and expanding away from the long-term averages, while price remains above the entire ribbon. This signals strengthening momentum and an improving medium-term trend, with the structure increasingly resembling an emerging Stage 2 advance rather than a Stage 1 base. RSI is around 69, confirming strong momentum but also indicating that the stock is approaching an elevated zone where consolidation would not be unusual. Volume has also expanded during several upward moves, providing additional confirmation of buying interest.
Overall, price, trend and volume are aligned bullishly—but after a strong move, the setup warrants discipline rather than chasing.
Technical Outlook — Bullish Across Time Frames
Short Term — Bullish, but Extended
Price remains above the GMMA ribbon with strong momentum. However, an RSI near the upper end of the bullish range suggests the stock is somewhat extended, making consolidation or a pullback possible.
Medium Term — Constructive
The earlier consolidation has transitioned into an expanding bullish structure, with short-term averages separating from the long-term ribbon. If earnings improve from Q2 onward, fundamentals and technical momentum could reinforce each other.
Long Term — Positive, but Early
The long-term GMMA structure is turning increasingly bullish, consistent with an emerging advancing trend. However, with a relatively short trading history since the July 2025 IPO, long-term technical conclusions should be viewed cautiously.
Final Verdict — A Great Business, But Price Matters

Anthem is a high-quality CRDMO with strong profitability, cash generation, a differentiated technology platform and a growing pipeline.
Catalysts
Unit 4, late-stage programme commercialisation, Big Pharma relationships and potential GLP-1 opportunities provide multiple growth drivers.
Investment question
The central issue is valuation. At a substantial earnings multiple, future returns will depend not merely on business growth but on whether earnings and free cash flow compound fast enough to justify the premium.
A great company can still be a poor investment if bought at the wrong price.
